The Chris Anu Saga Continues: The Cost of Betrayal
Once hailed as “The Anchorman” and the lion voice of Ambazonia, Chris Anu rose to national prominence during his tenure as Secretary of State for Communications and IT in the Government of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia under President Samuel Sako. As the director of ABC AMBA TV, his broadcasts were widely watched, inspiring hope across Ambazonia and the diaspora. His voice became synonymous with resistance and national pride. That was then.
Today, Chris Anu’s name has become a byword for betrayal.
It turns out that not all that glitters is gold, and not everyone who claims to fight for Ambazonia is genuine. While projecting the image of a committed revolutionary, Chris Anu was allegedly negotiating back-door deals with the enemy, La République du Cameroun, for personal gain. Ambazonians placed their trust in him, not knowing he was quietly working with the regime to undermine the very struggle he once claimed to champion.
The recent explosive revelation by Issa Tchiroma, confirming his long-standing friendship and communication with Chris Anu, did not surprise many. It merely confirmed widespread suspicions that Chris Anu had been working with La République du Cameroun to destabilize the Ambazonian struggle from within.
His failed coup d’état in 2021 marked a turning point. At a moment when Ambazonian defense forces were achieving significant military successes, Chris Anu attempted to overthrow President Sako. Many believe that had it not been for this internal sabotage, Ambazonian forces might have decisively shifted the balance of the war. Instead, the coup disrupted operations at a critical moment.
After failing to seize power, Chris Anu hijacked ABC AMBA TV, froze news broadcasts for weeks, and made off with a TV console used to establish his own rival station. Alongside John Egwayan, he allegedly deceived Ambazonian LGAs and counties, diverting 135,000 dollars. He then collaborated with Richard Tangu, then head of the National Treasury, to steal over 130,000 dollars from treasury accounts in the United States and abroad, crippling the government’s financial capacity.
Next came collusion with the now-defunct Restoration Council led by Elvis Kometa in a failed impeachment attempt against President Sako. When this gambit collapsed, Anu sought to form his own government, installing Emmanuel Tita as president. Tita quickly resigned upon realizing his mandate would last only four months. Marianta briefly succeeded him before Chris Anu himself assumed the presidency, only to later renounce the title, insisting on being called merely a “comrade in arms,” echoing enemy strategies to dissolve the Ambazonian government altogether.
Chris Anu promised his followers “hurricane firepower” and million-dollar donors. None of these promises materialized. In a moment of extraordinary irony, he once declared that there was “no Ambazonian flag because there is no country called Ambazonia.” Yet he claimed to be president of that very country.
The cost of this betrayal has been profound:
Strategic disruption: His coup derailed momentum at a decisive moment in the struggle, forcing the movement to expend energy repairing internal fractures rather than advancing militarily.
Financial damage: Hundreds of thousands of dollars were siphoned off from community structures and national coffers, weakening institutions.
Disillusionment among supporters: Many Ambazonians who followed him out of loyalty found themselves stranded and demoralized. Fortunately, many have since returned to the national fold, and the door remains open to all willing to rejoin the struggle for liberation.
Complicity in enemy operations: At the failed Canada Talks, he allegedly provided La République du Cameroun with sensitive information, leading to the targeting and elimination of several Ambazonian defense personnel.
Since then, Chris Anu has been spotted at various back-door meetings with La République du Cameroun representatives, pursuing his promise to destabilize the Ambazonian government, unsuccessfully. His Facebook TV project now flounders for lack of funding, as he repeatedly begs followers for contributions. It is unclear what became of the alleged “blood money” he received in exchange for betraying his country.
Ultimately, his former allies are now exposing his connections with the enemy. Once a vibrant and respected figure, Chris Anu appears worn out, isolated, and discredited. His legacy is now indelibly marked by betrayal, a cautionary tale for all.
But make no mistake: no individual can destroy the Ambazonian struggle. Many have tried and failed. Chris Anu is learning that hard truth. The resistance continues. The people remain resolute. Ambazonia is here to stay.
