BAMENDA – 8 March 2026 – For years, the political landscape of the Southern Cameroons struggle has been a crowded stage, marked by numerous voices, organizations, and competing visions of leadership. In the early years of the uprising, figures such as Ebenezer Akwanga and Cho Ayaba frequently appeared in public discourse, while others, including John Mbah Akuroh, were associated with key moments in the early mobilization of the resistance.

Over time, however, the passage of years—and the pressures of a prolonged conflict—have reshaped that landscape. Internal divisions, exile politics, arrests, and legal challenges have altered the influence of several early actors. Organizations connected to the armed struggle, including groups associated with the Ambazonia Defence Forces (ADF), have also faced scrutiny and legal proceedings in Europe and North America.

As the conflict enters its ninth year in 2026, the movement finds itself passing through a difficult but familiar phase seen in many liberation struggles: the gradual consolidation of leadership after a period of fragmentation.

Within this evolving environment, one figure has remained consistently visible in the political leadership of the Ambazonian movement: Dr. Samuel Ikome Sako.

From Interim Leadership to Political Continuity

Dr. Sako assumed leadership responsibilities in 2018 following the arrest and transfer of President Sisiku Julius Ayuk Tabe and several members of the Ambazonian leadership to Yaoundé. At the time, many observers believed that removing the movement’s senior leadership would weaken or possibly end the independence campaign.

Instead, the transition produced a new phase of leadership in exile. Dr. Sako, who had previously served in the Interim Government structure, stepped into the role during a period of extreme uncertainty. His tenure has been marked by attempts to maintain administrative continuity, diplomatic engagement with diaspora communities, and sustained advocacy for the Ambazonian cause in international forums.

Like many leaders in protracted liberation struggles, Sako has faced internal challenges. Disagreements within the Restoration Council and other factions—including a disputed attempt in 2022 to remove him from office—highlighted the depth of internal tensions. Yet despite these disputes, he has remained a central figure within the political structures associated with the Ambazonian Government in exile.

The Strategic Landscape of the Conflict

As the war approaches a decade in duration, the rhetoric of the early years has gradually given way to a more sober strategic reality. The humanitarian toll has been immense, with displacement, economic disruption, and social fragmentation affecting large parts of the territory.

Supporters of the Ambazonian cause argue that the continued boycott of elections organized by the government in Yaoundé demonstrates the persistence of political rejection within the English-speaking regions. Statements from Dr. Sako in late 2025 describing the elections as illegitimate and citing high levels of boycott reflect the political messaging that has characterized his leadership.

At the same time, the conflict has evolved militarily. Armed groups that initially emerged with limited resources have adapted their tactics over the years. Meanwhile, the Cameroonian state has continued to rely on military operations to contain the insurgency, creating a prolonged stalemate that neither side has been able to decisively resolve.

The Question of Representation

One of the central challenges in conflicts of this nature is identifying legitimate interlocutors for any future peace process. In international mediation, governments and diplomatic actors typically seek partners who can demonstrate both organizational structure and a degree of representative legitimacy.

Supporters of Dr. Sako argue that his leadership within the Ambazonian Government in exile provides such a framework. They point to several factors:

  • Continuity of Leadership: His tenure since 2018 has provided a measure of stability during a turbulent period in the movement.
  • Institutional Structure: The Government of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia maintains a formal political structure that supporters believe could serve as a platform for negotiations.
  • Diaspora Engagement: Large segments of the Ambazonian diaspora remain active in supporting diplomatic advocacy, humanitarian assistance, and international awareness efforts.

While other factions and organizations continue to exist within the broader movement, the question of unified representation remains one of the defining challenges facing the struggle.

Toward an Eventual Negotiating Table

After nearly a decade of violence, many analysts believe that a durable solution will eventually require political dialogue. The path toward such negotiations remains uncertain, but history suggests that prolonged conflicts often move toward some form of mediated settlement.

If that moment arrives, the issue of who speaks for the Ambazonian population will become unavoidable. For many within the movement, Dr. Samuel Ikome Sako represents one of the central figures capable of occupying that role.

The Long Road Ahead

The future of the Ambazonian struggle remains uncertain. The aspirations of self-determination, the realities of geopolitics, and the human cost of war continue to shape the debate both inside the territory and across the diaspora.

What is clear, however, is that the movement has evolved beyond its earliest chaotic stages. The coming years will likely determine whether its leadership structures can transform resistance into a coherent political pathway toward peace.

In that unfolding story, Dr. Samuel Ikome Sako remains one of the most prominent voices shaping the direction of the Ambazonian cause. Whether viewed as a unifying leader, a transitional figure, or a central negotiator for the future, his role in the trajectory of the struggle is unlikely to disappear from the political conversation anytime soon.
