PUBLIC NOTICE: TO COMMUNITY ELDERS AND CUSTODIANS OF TRADITION

Date: February 11, 2026
Subject: Strengthening Community Dialogue and Traditional Conflict Resolution

To the Elders and traditional custodians of Nkwen, Bambili, and communities across the Midland, Savannah, and Atlantic Zones:

Recent tensions surrounding the land dispute between neighboring communities have once again reminded us how fragile peace can become when long-standing disagreements are not carefully managed. At such moments, the responsibility placed on elders and traditional institutions becomes even more critical.

This notice is therefore issued as an appeal for wisdom, restraint, and renewed commitment to peaceful community-led dialogue in addressing disputes that affect shared histories and futures.

The Role of Traditional Institutions

For generations, elders and traditional councils have served as guardians of land, culture, and communal harmony. Their authority has historically rested on trust, mediation, and the ability to balance justice with reconciliation.

Today, however, communities often find themselves seeking solutions through administrative channels, sometimes leaving traditional mechanisms underutilized. This shift raises important questions about how communities can restore confidence in local dispute-resolution structures while maintaining stability and preventing escalation.

Strengthening traditional mediation processes does not mean rejecting existing governance structures, but rather ensuring that local voices and customary wisdom remain central to resolving disputes that directly affect communities.

A Call for Community Responsibility

To preserve peace and prevent misunderstandings from deepening into lasting divisions, several principles deserve renewed attention:

Encourage Dialogue Before Escalation
Communities should prioritize direct engagement and mediation through traditional councils and respected elders before disputes escalate or require external intervention.

Restore Confidence in Traditional Processes
Strengthening local dispute-resolution systems can help communities address land and boundary concerns in ways that respect history and shared coexistence.

Promote Responsible Communication
Public commentary—especially on social media—can sometimes inflame tensions. Community influencers, activists, and commentators should exercise care to avoid statements that deepen divisions or misrepresent neighboring communities.

Strengthen Inter-Community Cooperation
Many neighboring communities share family ties, markets, schools, and livelihoods. Dialogue aimed at preserving peaceful coexistence should remain the priority over confrontation.

Governance Rooted in Community Trust

Disputes over land and boundaries are deeply emotional because they touch identity, heritage, and livelihood. Solutions must therefore go beyond legal or administrative decisions and seek reconciliation that communities themselves consider legitimate.

The goal must not be victory for one side, but sustainable peace for all.

Conclusion: Choosing Wisdom Over Division

At a time when communities face many shared challenges, division only weakens collective resilience. Elders and custodians of tradition remain uniquely positioned to guide communities toward dialogue, mutual respect, and long-term harmony.

The future of neighboring communities depends not only on how disputes are resolved, but on how relationships are preserved afterward.

Peace, restraint, and cooperation remain the strongest foundations for protecting both heritage and future generations.
