Saturday July 26th 2025-The Super Falcons of Nigeria break record after they beat the Atlas lionesses of morocco 3 -2 to be a successive ten times winner of the female AFCON and picked up $1m in prize money – which has been doubled since the last edition – and become the first side to lift the new-look Wafcon trophy.

The Atlas Lionesses led 2-0 at half time through Ghizlane Chebbak’s fine curling effort and a shot from Sanaa Mssoudy.

At second half the super falcons generated steam with Esther Okoronkwo pulling a goal back from the penalty spot in the 64th minute after Nouhaila Benzina handled Folamide Ijamilusi’s cross.

Okoronko again burst into the Moroccan box at the 71st minute and squared for Ijamilusi to pull tie, then Jennifer Echegini coming in as substitute, scored the winner with just two minutes to full time.

The 21,000-capacity Olympic Stadium was stunned into silence as the Super Falcons players collapsed to the turf in celebrations at the refree’s final whistle. They had just won a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.

They billed their campaign as Mission X and just achieved their target, reclaiming the title they last won in 2018 and preserving their 100% record in Wafcon finals.

Meanwhile, Morocco hired the 2023 Women’s World Cup-winning coach Jorge Vilda after he parted company with Spain in a bid to land their first continental crown, but just lost back-to-back a Wafcon finals.

They now, will have the chance to put it all right when they host the 2026 edition in March next year.
