AFRICAS DEPENDENCE IS OF THE PAST AND MUST BE CALLED TO A STOP

“Africa is rich in resources, but poor in leadership.” These words from Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, still resonate today as a call to action for African leaders.

The time for populists leadership is over
Africa does not need new populist dictators in military uniform seeking undemocratic legitimacy. It needs leaders who are strategic, diplomatic, and possess a sense of realism and openness in politics in the context of cultural diversity and globalization. As Nelson Mandela said, “A leader is like a shepherd; he must stay behind the flock, letting it go ahead while discreetly guiding it.”

The need for Good Governance is of the essence.
It is not “military forces and paramilitary mercenaries” who will liberate our continent. It is intellectuals with a sense of foresight and good governance, with a spirit of fear for the public good, which is sacred. As Jean-Jacques Rousseau said, “The government must be accountable to the people.”

Time for truth and Action
The time for populist and hateful rhetoric against the West, which is not solely responsible for our misfortunes, is over. It is time for the deliverance of the people through truth and action. True salvation will come from those African intellectual and traditionalist leaders who respect and fear the public good.

African Leadership must do the job
As Thomas Sankara said, “We must manage our countries while taking into account the urban and social transformations that accompany this context.” African leaders must be able to manage the complex challenges of globalization while respecting African traditions and cultures.

Conclusion
Africa needs leaders who are strategists, diplomats, and intellectuals. Leaders who respect public affairs and are capable of managing the complex challenges of globalization. Only by doing so can we build a better future for our countries and our peoples.
