ADF KIDNAPPING AND ATTACK IN WOWO VILLAGE, Thirteen Residents Reportedly Injured, Businessman Abducted and FCFA 4 Million Ransom Allegedly Collected

The village of Wowo in Ndu LGA, Donga Mantung County, already scarred by previous violence, was again thrown into fear during the night of Saturday, 5 September, into Sunday, 6 September 2026, when an armed group reportedly entered the community in what residents describe as a coordinated kidnapping operation targeting local businessmen.

According to eyewitnesses, victims, and community sources, the armed men are alleged to have crossed into Donga Mantung from neighboring Bui County and to have been associated with elements identifying themselves with the ADF.

The first reported victim was Mr. Ringnui Julius, younger brother of businessman Mr. Denise Ngwayi. After allegedly abducting Mr. Ringnui Julius, the armed men reportedly proceeded to the home of Mr. Ngwayi, who appears to have been another intended target.

Mr. Ngwayi’s compound was fenced and its gate locked. Witnesses say the armed men began striking the gate in an apparent attempt to force their way into the property. The noise alerted residents and Villagers began blowing whistles and converging on the compound to determine what was happening.

According to eye witnesses, they encountered armed men speaking Lamnsoh, the language widely associated with the Nso people, as well as broken English. The armed men reportedly fired warning shots into the air. Residents who had responded to the alarm were allegedly rounded up at gunpoint. Witnesses say their mobile phones were taken and several people were beaten and attacked with machetes. During the confusion, Mr. Denise Ngwayi reportedly escaped.

THIRTEEN PEOPLE REPORTEDLY INJURED

Community sources report that thirteen people sustained injuries serious enough to require treatment at Ndu District Hospital. Among those identified by community sources are: Mr. Nfor Julius, Mr. Nfor Godwin, Madame Tatiana Fai, Nsagha Nzi, Mr. Nzi Valentine. Mr. Ngala Emmanuel, Mr. Nzi Emmanuel, Madame Confidence Bombi, Mr. Nfor Bambo, Madame Jumshu Christabel, Mr. Ngala Leonard and Madame Yuba Evette

The above have been victims from the incident Rev. Pastor Ngah Valentine and his wife was also reportedly assaulted during the incident. According to community accounts, they were severely beaten and forced at gunpoint to surrender their mobile phones. Other residents reportedly had telephones and personal belongings taken from them.

ABDUCTION AND ALLEGED FCFA 4 MILLION RANSOM

Mr. Ringnui Julius was reportedly taken away at gunpoint. According to family and community accounts, he was subsequently subjected to severe physical abuse, including alleged beatings and machete injuries to his legs. The captors are reported to have demanded a ransom and community sources state that FCFA 4,000,000 — four million CFA francs — was eventually paid before Mr. Ringnui Julius was released.

Investigators and community sources say the ransom payment was made through a specific telephone/mobile-money number that has also allegedly been used to threaten other people. For security and evidentiary reasons, the full telephone number should not be publicly reproduced at this stage. It should instead be preserved, together with transaction records, subscriber-registration information, screenshots, call logs, voice messages, and related evidence for investigators and human-rights monitors.

Those records could prove crucial in establishing who received the money and whether the same number is connected to additional alleged kidnapping or extortion incidents.

PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION POINTS TOWARD AN ADF UNIT

Community investigators say their inquiries are continuing. Their preliminary findings reportedly point toward an armed unit associated with the ADF operating from Bui County, and specifically toward an individual identified locally as “General Rewind” as the alleged commander behind the operation.

These allegations have not yet been independently adjudicated, and responsibility should ultimately be established through evidence, including witness testimony, medical records, telecommunications records, mobile-money transactions, photographs, hospital documentation, and any available communications from the alleged kidnappers.

NOT TO BE DISMISSED AS ORDINARY

According the accounts provided by victims and witnesses , the Wowo attack represents something more serious than an isolated criminal episode. Armed men reportedly crossed from one county into another and abducting civilians with Villagers responding to an alarm allegedly detained and beaten.

Thirteen people reportedly required hospital treatment. Private property and mobile phones were allegedly seized. A multimillion-franc ransom was reportedly demanded and paid. Such conduct cannot be justified by the Ambazonian struggle, military necessity, political disagreement, or revolutionary rhetoric.

Kidnapping civilians for ransom is not liberation. Beating villagers is not self-defense. Extorting families does not advance the cause of self-determination. And armed groups that claim to defend a population cannot simultaneously turn that same population into a source of ransom revenue.

A CALL FOR A FULL INVESTIGATION

The Wowo incident requires an immediate, credible, and evidence-based investigation. Relevant authorities, community institutions, human-rights monitors, and responsible Ambazonian leadership should seek to establish: Who planned the operation? Who participated in it? From which camp did the armed men originate? Who gave the orders? Who received the FCFA 4 million? Who controls the telephone and mobile-money accounts allegedly used in the operation? Were the same individuals involved in previous kidnappings in Donga Mantung County?

THE CIVILIAN POPULATION MUST NOT BECOME THE ENEMY

The people of Wowo, Ndu LGA, and Donga Mantung County have already endured the consequences of a prolonged conflict. They should not now be forced to fear armed actors claiming to operate in the name of the same struggle from which civilians expect protection.

There must be a clear line. The civilian population is not a source of financing. Villagers are not bargaining chips. Businessmen are not ransom accounts. Families are not legitimate military targets. Whoever is ultimately established to have ordered, participated in, financed, or benefited from the Wowo attack should be held accountable on the basis of evidence.

And if the preliminary allegations identifying an ADF unit and its commander are substantiated, those responsible should be required to answer for the abduction, assaults, injuries, property seizures, and alleged ransom collection associated with the operation. The Ambazonian struggle cannot claim moral legitimacy while abuses against Ambazonian civilians are ignored. The protection of the civilian population must come first.
