No Russian Alliance: Exposing a Coordinated Propaganda Campaign Against Ambazonia

By fabricating a Russian “connection,” Yaoundé propagandists aim to undermine U.S. confidence in Ambazonian diplomatic actors, sow confusion within diaspora communities, and derail strategic focus from ongoing legitimate channels of engagement.

In recent weeks, a wave of fabricated narratives has emerged across various social media platforms and pro–Yaoundé propaganda channels, claiming that the Government of the Federal Republic of Southern Cameroons Ambazonia in exile has forged an “alliance” or “partnership” with the Russian Federation. Upon closer examination, this story collapses under the weight of basic facts, verifiable records, and geopolitical reality.

No Parliamentary Debate, No Resolution, No Policy

Unlike the United States, where Ambazonia has been the subject of public debates, congressional interest, and diaspora lobbying, the Russian Parliament (Duma) has never debated the Ambazonian struggle, nor has it passed any resolution or issued any policy statement on the matter. A comprehensive review of official Russian government records, parliamentary archives, and foreign policy communiqués reveals no trace of any formal engagement with Ambazonia.

Diplomatic observers note that Moscow’s Africa policy focuses primarily on military cooperation, strategic minerals, and access to warm-water ports. There is no credible evidence that Ambazonia currently fits within any of these operational frameworks in Russia’s foreign engagement strategy.

The Anatomy of a Disinformation Campaign

The claims of Russian involvement follow a now-familiar pattern used repeatedly by operatives of La République du Cameroun.

First, a photograph of a self-proclaimed “diplomat” or activist is circulated, often taken beside a Russian building, flag, or signboard.

Next, a sensational headline or doctored press release claiming “Russian support” or “recognition” is attached to it.

Finally, the narrative is flooded across WhatsApp groups and Facebook pages, hoping that repetition will override scrutiny.

This method deliberately avoids presenting verifiable evidence, such as official communiqués, diplomatic notes, or legislative records. It preys on public emotion and the desire for quick geopolitical wins, while diverting attention from Ambazonia’s actual strategic diplomatic pathways, particularly those involving U.S. institutions and civil society networks.

Strategic Diversion from American Engagement

Analysts believe the timing of these fabrications is not accidental. Ambazonia’s diplomatic engagements in the United States — including outreach to lawmakers, policy think tanks, and diaspora-led lobbying efforts — have increasingly exposed the colonial underpinnings of the Franco–Cameroonian alliance.

By fabricating a Russian “connection,” Yaoundé propagandists aim to undermine U.S. confidence in Ambazonian diplomatic actors, sow confusion within diaspora communities, and derail strategic focus from ongoing legitimate channels of engagement.

The objective is psychological: to divert the Ambazonian movement from its strongest international base and scatter attention toward a manufactured geopolitical mirage.

On the Contrary: LRC’s Documented Military Cooperation with Russia

Ironically, while Ambazonia is falsely accused of Russian ties, it is La République du Cameroun that has entered into concrete military agreements with Moscow.

LRC has signed military cooperation agreements with Russia covering defense logistics, training, and arms supply. These agreements are publicly documented and form part of Russia’s broader military diplomacy in Africa.

President Paul Biya and members of his family have paid official visits to Russia, consolidating diplomatic and defense relationships. Cameroon’s Minister of Defense has undertaken high-level visits to Moscow, focusing on military cooperation, equipment acquisition, and strategic training programs.

French Cameroonian students and officers have received scholarships to attend Russian military academies, where they are trained in various military sciences and tactics including artillery, intelligence, and special forces operations.

Several French Cameroonians have volunteered to fight on the Russian side in the ongoing war against Ukraine, a phenomenon quietly acknowledged in regional security reports.

These engagements underscore the hypocrisy of Yaoundé’s propaganda. While it accuses Ambazonia of non-existent Russian links, it is the Biya regime itself that maintains structured, strategic, and operational ties with Moscow.

Potential but Nonexistent Engagement with Ambazonia

It is important to make a nuanced distinction. While no official Russian engagement with Ambazonia currently exists, this does not imply that diplomatic outreach to Russia is impossible. In international relations, every power responds to strategic interests, sustained diplomacy, and incentives. Should Ambazonia develop a well-articulated diplomatic plan and offer clear strategic value, Russia, like any other state, could potentially become an interlocutor. But that remains a hypothetical scenario, not a present reality.

The French Shadow: Boulere and the Economic Stranglehold

While rumors of Russian support are fabricated, France’s stranglehold is real and well-documented. For decades, French interests have dominated the economic landscape of Southern Cameroons through proxy operators like Boulere.

Boulere’s takeover of banana and palm plantations from Ambazonian farmers is emblematic. Those who resist face punitive taxation and administrative harassment, often forced to surrender their lands under duress. Boulere functions not merely as a businessman but as a critical intelligence asset for France within Cameroon, maintaining a surveillance and control network on behalf of Paris.

Across Africa, similar French-aligned operatives have been embedded in key economic sectors to ensure continued exploitation of African resources under the façade of sovereignty.

Conclusion: Facts Over Fantasies

The investigation leaves no room for ambiguity. There is no alliance between Russia and Ambazonia. There are, however, documented and ongoing military and diplomatic ties between Russia and La République du Cameroun.

The narrative of Ambazonia–Russia cooperation is a calculated disinformation tactic designed to divert attention from legitimate diplomacy and cover up Yaoundé’s own strategic alliances.

For a people fighting for self-determination, strategic clarity is non-negotiable. Rumors may be emotionally satisfying in the short term, but only truth and disciplined diplomacy will advance the Ambazonian cause. As the geopolitical terrain evolves, facts—not fantasies—must guide our struggle.
