Burkina Faso Pays Tribute to Former Ghanaian President John Jerry Rawlings.

An Avenue Named in Tribute to Former Ghanaian President John Jerry Rawlings has been inaugurated in Ouagadougou capital of Burkina faso

Burkinabe authorities on Sunday May 18th 2025 dedicated the avenue to former Ghanaian President John Jerry Rawlings, as a close friend of Captain Thomas Sankara and the people of Burkina Faso.

It was on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Thomas Sankara Mausoleum, that this new avenue located in the Dassasgho neighborhood of Ouagadougou was named in tribute to this African giant, considered “a great fighter for the emancipation of the African continent.”

The new “Avenue JERRY JOHN RAWLINGS” runs along the west side of the National Museum wall, to connect to Boulevard Capitaine Isidore Noël Thomas Sankara.

“Ouagadougou, a hospitable city and melting pot of peoples, is proud to dedicate one of its avenues to President John Jerry Rawlings, who was a major player in the strong friendship that unites Burkina Faso and Ghana,” said the Bukina faso Minister of Communications Gilbert Pingdwendé Ouédraogo, who represented the prime minister in the occassion..

For him, this tribute is in recognition of the multifaceted and selfless support that President Rawlings, who led Ghana from June to September 1979 and again from 1981 to 1993, provided to the father of the Burkinabe Revolution, Captain Thomas Sankara.

“The naming of this avenue after President John Jerry Rawlings is an invitation to consolidate everything that unites our two peoples and to ensure that present and future generations pursue our common goal of building a united and prosperous Africa,” added Minister Ouédraogo.

The symbolic christening ceremony was attended by a large delegation from the Republic of Ghana, including relatives of the late president Rawlings..
