We are home to news on Cameroon and the CEMAC region. We are dedicated to honest and reliable reporting.
We are the voice of the Cameroonian people and their fight for freedom and democracy at a time when the Yaoundé government is silencing dissent and suppressing democratic voices.
The reported deaths of Larry and Ransom must not disappear into the expanding catalogue of unexplained casualties from the conflict. If the two men were unlawfully killed, their families deserve justice. If members of the security forces were responsible, those involved should be identified and subjected to an independent and credible accountability process. If a proper investigation establishes circumstances different from those residents have described, that evidence must also be reported honestly.

Ekona – August 17, 2026 – Two civilians were reportedly shot in Ekona, in Cameroon’s Southwest Region, on Friday evening, August 14, under circumstances that residents allege involved members of the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR). The reported deaths have renewed concerns about the conduct of security operations in communities caught in the prolonged conflict between Cameroonian government forces and Ambazonian separatists.
Residents identified the victims as Larry and Ransom, both reportedly from Ekona’s Last Town quarter. According to an unnamed resident quoted by the Cameroon News Agency (CNA), the two men were returning from their farms at approximately 5 p.m. when soldiers stopped and searched them.
The source alleged that the men were initially permitted to continue on their way but that gunfire was heard moments later. CNA subsequently published video footage appearing to show two motionless male bodies at separate locations.
The footage is disturbing, but it does not establish who killed the men, why they were killed or what occurred before the recording began. The Independentist News has not independently verified the identities of the victims, authenticated the complete circumstances surrounding the footage or established whether BIR personnel were responsible. No publicly available statement from Cameroonian authorities addressing the allegations had been located at the time of publication. CNA’s original report
The allegations arise amid reports of heightened security activity in Ekona. Residents say government security forces have conducted operations in the area during recent weeks, including searches and civilian arrests.
One resident alleged that seven young men and four young women were recently detained and transported to a security facility in Kumba. The Independentist News has not independently verified that account or established the identities, present locations or legal status of those reportedly detained.
Residents have also made allegations concerning soldiers reportedly stationed at a government primary school in Ekona. According to the CNA source, civilians returning from their farms have been stopped and required to present identification documents.
Those unable to produce identification were allegedly beaten, detained or compelled to pay between 5,000 and 10,000 CFA francs before being released. The Independentist News, has not independently confirmed that these incidents occurred, determined who may have collected the reported payments or established whether any payment was officially authorized.
Nevertheless, residents describe an unmistakable consequence of the intensified security presence: fear. Some reportedly remain indoors or avoid moving freely through the community as checkpoints, patrols and identification inspections become increasingly visible features of daily life.
A Community Caught Between Armed Forces
Ekona and surrounding communities have endured years of armed confrontation, military deployments, separatist attacks, civilian displacement and allegations of abuses by multiple actors.
In such an environment, reports of civilian deaths must be investigated carefully rather than absorbed immediately into the competing narratives of the conflict. The identities of those responsible, the precise circumstances of the deaths and whether the victims were civilians uninvolved in hostilities are matters requiring credible and independent determination.
From an Ambazonian perspective, these reports are likely to reinforce longstanding accusations that ordinary civilians continue to bear the greatest burden of a conflict they did not create. Credible journalism, however, requires more than repeating allegations. It demands documentation, corroboration and accountability regardless of the identity or affiliation of the accused.
Larry and Ransom Deserve the Truth
The reported deaths of Larry and Ransom must not disappear into the expanding catalogue of unexplained casualties from the conflict. If the two men were unlawfully killed, their families deserve justice. If members of the security forces were responsible, those involved should be identified and subjected to an independent and credible accountability process. If a proper investigation establishes circumstances different from those residents have described, that evidence must also be reported honestly.
At present, the claim that BIR soldiers killed the two men remains an allegation. The available footage appears to document the aftermath of two deaths, but it does not, by itself, identify the perpetrators or establish their motive. What the footage and residents’ accounts make clear is the urgent need for a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation into what happened in Ekona on Friday evening.
The Independentist News, will continue monitoring the case and will update this report when credible, independently verifiable information or an official response becomes available.
