An Ambazonian Patriot writes to the Independentistnews, addressing a message of Endurance to the people of Ambazonia

Letter to the Editor

Dear sir,

Since the crisis in Southern Cameroons escalated in 2016, many observers have tried to assess its outcome using conventional measures of war—territories taken, forces defeated, or governments overthrown. Yet history suggests that struggles rooted in self-determination rarely follow traditional military logic.

In conflicts between a powerful state and a population seeking autonomy or independence, the strategic objectives of each side are fundamentally different. A government must re-establish full authority, end resistance, and demonstrate clear and lasting control in order to claim victory. When this decisive outcome remains out of reach, the state’s central objective is still unfulfilled.

For a people pursuing self-determination, however, the threshold for success is often defined in other ways. Their strength may lie less in military capacity and more in endurance, unity, and the preservation of identity. As long as a movement survives and a population continues to express its collective aspirations, the cause itself remains alive.

This dynamic is reflected in the observation that in asymmetric struggles, the stronger power may falter by failing to secure a decisive victory, while the weaker side can achieve a form of strategic success simply by refusing to be defeated.

Years into the conflict, the situation remains unresolved. The political future of Southern Cameroons continues to be debated locally and internationally, underscoring the fact that the underlying grievances that sparked the crisis have not disappeared. The persistence of the issue itself points to the need for thoughtful and lasting solutions.

At such moments, endurance alone is not enough. History shows that movements grounded in unity, discipline, and constructive purpose are better positioned to influence their future. Reflection, organization, and a commitment to peaceful progress can strengthen communities even amid prolonged uncertainty.

For many in Southern Cameroons Ambazonia, this period calls for reinforcing three enduring principles: unity among communities, confidence in cultural and historical identity, and dedication to a future shaped by peace, justice, and dignity. Societies that nurture hope, invest in education, and support one another often emerge more resilient from periods of hardship.

While the road ahead may be long, resilience and moral clarity can sustain a people’s aspirations. The lessons of history suggest that endurance, cohesion, and constructive vision frequently shape the final outcome of such struggles more than temporary gains or setbacks.

The people of Southern Cameroons can therefore draw strength from their collective spirit. A community that preserves its identity and sense of purpose has already demonstrated a powerful form of resolve.

Sincerely, a Patriot
